What Vero Beach Weather Does to a Roof Edge
Vero Beach gets about 53 inches of rain a year, mostly between June and October in short, heavy afternoon storms; August alone averages more than 7 inches. A small gutter overflows, and the water hits the same strip of sandy soil every time. A few wet seasons later there is a trench along the drip line.
Many homes have no gutters
Florida does not require gutters on most houses. The typical home in the city dates to the mid-1970s, and many mainland block ranches were built with none, or with one short run over the front door. That makes new installation the most common job here. Downspouts that release water at least 3 feet from the slab keep it out of the garage.
Salt air on the barrier island
East of the lagoon, salt air goes after anything thin or made of plain steel. Steel screws rust and streak the fascia (the board the gutter hangs on). Island homes do better with heavier aluminum, stainless or coated fasteners, and in some cases copper gutters.
Debris that never takes a season off
Live oaks drop leaves and stringy tassels in spring, pines shed needles all year, and palms let go of seed clusters and fronds. There is no single fall cleanup here. A clogged outlet is the usual cause of overflow, which is why gutter cleaning and gutter guards come up so often.
Wind
Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30. Frances and Jeanne both crossed the Treasure Coast in 2004, and on October 9, 2024 the Hurricane Milton outbreak sent two EF1 tornadoes through the Vero Beach area. Wind grabs a run at its weakest hanger and peels the rest. Hidden hangers screwed into solid fascia hold far better than old spikes. If a storm already pulled yours loose, start with gutter repair.
